VESSEL DESCRIPTION
The J-40 was the first blue water offshore cruising boat built by J-Boats. The boat has a full cruising interior and is designed with an emphasis good sailing performance. Since the mid-1980's the J-40 has enjoyed success racing, particularly in offshore events. Noteworthy successes have been in the 600 NM Newport to Bermuda race and 289 NM Chicago to Mackinac Island race. The hull has a slightly raked bow, reversed transom, externally bolted fin keel with bulb and spade rudder. The vessel is fitted with the shoal draft wing keel. On deck starting forward is a single anchor bow roller, Harken genoa furling unit, recessed anchor locker and horizontal electric windless with chain gypsy and line capstan. Twenty-four inch high lifeline stanchions with double courses of lifeline wire terminate at stainless steel bow and stern railings. The low profile cabin trunk top has three water tight deck hatches, four ventilation dorades and four teak handrails. There are four opening port lights along each side. The large cockpit has a recessed stern anchor locker and propane storage tank locker along the starboard side and aft port corner and a large gear storage locker under the port bench seat. The helmsman sits all the way aft behind a pedestal mounted stainless steel wheel helm and has full access to the engine controls and instrumentation. There is a wind generator fixed to an aluminum transom mounted post on the starboard side and a radar antenna mounted to a post on the port side . The teak framed acrylic sliding companionway hatch at the forward side of the cockpit is on center and has lee boards. Sail control lines lead aft to jammer cleats and winches located on the cabin top on each side of the companionway. The interior is arranged with private V-berth forward cabin with enclosed head with shower to port and hanging locker to starboard. Walking aft, the main salon has an L-shaped settee with cocktail table to port and straight settee to starboard. A folding leafed table is stowed on the forward bulkhead to port. The L-shaped galley has a large top loading ice box, three-burner LPG stove with oven and double stainless steel sinks with pressured hot and cold water. A second enclosed head with shower is located aft of the galley and opposite the galley to port is an outboard facing navigation station. The aft cabin is accessed via a door aft of the navigation station and features a larger than queen size berth and a hanging locker. The 43hp Volvo engine is located under the galley sink and is coupled to a conventional straight shaft marine reduction gear. The J-40 is masthead-rigged with high aspect mainsail and overlapping headsail. The aluminum spar is keel stepped and has double in-line spreaders.
VESSEL CONSTRUCTION
The hull deck and cabin trunk are sandwich construction using Baltic core and fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) using multiple layers of fiberglass matt, woven roving and polyester resin. The hull, deck and cabin and interior hull liner are singularly molded using a vacuum process which helps to fill all voids in the core material and assure a proper resin to glass content ratio. The cast lead keel is bolted on and the foam-cored FRP rudder is hung through the hull.
